The Hydrow machine arrived eleven weeks ago and the results are in: Iβve found my exercise. Since it arrived, Iβve used the rowing machine at least 5 days a week and the Hydrow app even more. For the first time in my life, I actually look forward to workouts and feel confident that Iβll continue to do so. Itβs become a habit.

In most issues of my newsletter, Ready for Rain, I include recommendations for shows, movies, books, podcasts, etc. Below you’ll find everything I recommended to readers in 2021.
I Can Recommend: Gardening Edition
Monty Don I sometimes wonder what it is about British TV that we find so entertaining. Sure, there are charming hosts with funny aphorisms and accents. But the sheer abundance of quality shows that are unlike anything we see in the US is confounding. My guess is that...
I Can Recommend… Meat Thermometer Edition
I realize some may scoff at the use of a thermometer when a "real" chef can just feel when meat is up to temperature. I prefer data. I use meat thermometers near the end of the cooking process and place the probe into the meat and leave it there until it reaches...
I Can Recommend: Movies to Stream
This week I have three very different movies to recommend. In fact, you could say that the theme of the week is variety. Stowaway (Netflix) A team of three is on a mission to Mars and discovers that someone else is on the ship. I enjoyed this movie because it's well...
I Can Recommend: Octopus Edition π
Octopuses are having a moment right now and I admit to being fascinated by them. If you're wondering, the plural of octopus is not octopi because the word comes from Greek and not Latin. Anyway, here are my recommended octopus stories in four forms: βMy Octopus...

In my weekly newsletter, Ready for Rain, I usually share recommendations for media, products, and ideas that I find interesting or useful. Today I’m sharing the my recommendations in separate blog posts for easy consumption.
A Cabin the PNW Woods
It's a familiar story. Two friends decide to build a cabin in the woods where they can get away from desk jobs and spend time away from the city. These stories often cover the same territory: the dream runs headlong into reality. The story below is no different, but...
Solo Stove for Backyard Fires
Since then, the Solo Stove has become one of my favorite products because it makes backyard fires easy, safe, and clean. I often tell people that itβs an awesome piece of engineering, for what is essentially a fire pit.
